Beginners – Bingo bag Pattern Instructions

Every Saturday we often see all the people head off to the local RSL to play bingo. One of our local sit and sew ladies requested if I could help her with a pattern for a bingo bag. This is the resulting pattern the bag has many outside pocket for all your dobbers, phone, charms, pens and pencils.

I love that you can use it for many purposes and is so cute. The scissors in the front are embroidery scissors. I hope you have fun making the bag. Enjoy!

I hope to improve the photos as they didn't turn out exactly as I hoped.

Reinforcements

Iron the medium weight interfacing to the inside lining pieces and pocket pieces. Trim to fit.

Squares that’ll make sense in the end

Using a rotary ruler make squares in the bottom corners, measuring in three inches.

Make little squares in Outer lining, inner lining and pockets.

Quick Trick: Make sure all your layers line up and if you are using directional material that they are facing the right way. Layer on top of one another then cut through all the layers.

Ironing is important

Iron the top of the pocket in ¼ of an inch then fold over and iron again. The raw edge should not be seen.

Quick trick: Extend your stitch so that when the needle goes through the fabric there is enough space for the needle to recover. No bent needles. A 3mm to 3.5mm length stitch was used in this pattern.

Let’s make some handles

Place the wadding into the handle. Fold the fabric to the centre then fold again so that the raw edges are inside the centre.

Widen the stitch ( I used a 3.5mm length) Sew down the folded edge ¼ inch wide. Then sew down the opposite side. Your handle size should reduce. Optional lines can be added but two is just fine. Repeat with the other handle.

Lots and lots of pockets

Sew the pocket top 1/8th of an inch in. Sew straight across. Repeat on the other pocket.

Place your pocket square on your front lining square. Sew up both sides and the bottom with a stay stitch.

Place out your items you would like in the outside pockets and measure placing then mark the line should not go past the 3” base squares. Remember that the part above your cut-outs will eventually be the sides.

Sew along the lines remembering to do a reverse stitch at the start and end.

So Fluffy

Using basting spray. Spray onto the wrong side of the Outer lining. Place the batting on top. There should be a gap around the long edges and the wadding should hug the little square edges. Repeat with other outer lining side.

Place outer lining pieces right sides together and sew along the sides and the bottom lines.

Place inner lining right sides together and sew along the sides and bottom line.

I still don’t know how it happens?

 MAGIC CORNERS

Taking the edge of the right corner match it to the side corner until they meet. A straight line should appear. Match the seams and pin. Repeat with other corner on the bag lining. Sew straight across using a ½ inch seam or foot width.

Check you inside seams for anything that didn’t catch properly and fix by sewing further in. Trim any messy edges.

Finishing off the bag

Sew a ¼ inch seam along the top. I put markers where I wanted my charm ribbon to be. When I came to them I inserted a piece of ribbon folded over in between the linings and sewed over it. Don’t forget to reverse at the start and end.

Once completed put your foot a space away to do a second line so that the top super strong. Trim off any excess threads.

Congratulations!

You have now completed your bingo bag and it is now ready to be filled with your favorite dabber, charms and snacks.
